Victor Margolin, one of the pioneers of design studies, who remains one of the most prominent figures in the field, discusses the nature and study of design in the post-millennial era and outlines potential development scenarios for both domains. Divided into two sections—design practice and design studies—the book includes articles on topics such as the history of design, design research, design as a political tool, sustainable design, and the issues arising from the relationship between design and advanced technology. Margolin also examines the work of renowned designers, such as matrix designer Ken Isaac. The entire book reflects the author’s aim to highlight the underlying connections between various approaches to creating and thinking about design. He advocates for the establishment of an international, interdisciplinary field of design studies and proposes a new ethical action plan for designers and researchers, which would involve responsibility towards users, sustainability considerations, and complex issues related to the responsible application of advanced technology in solving human life problems.
