Tuukka Kaila “Everything I Now Have, One Day…”

The title of the sculpture depicted in this book is Everything I Now Have, One Day I Will Have Lost. It was exhibited in October 2011 at a small gallery in Helsinki. The exhibition featured a selection of photographs from another book published around the same time, Fleeting. The sculpture at the exhibition fulfilled the role of an essay, similar to those typically found in exhibition catalogs that contextualize the artwork. During the exhibition, the sculpture was given the difficult task of transforming from a three-dimensional living being into the abstraction of ideas presumably present in the photos. Despite the gallery attendant’s tender care, the tree could not bear its symbolic burden. Instead, the idea it represented shed its leaves and lost everything. What remains are the photographs. But over time, photographs slowly tend to replace the events they are meant to preserve in our memory. And all we remember are the photos. — Tuukka Kaila
