Description
Karl Pärsimägi (1902–1942), born in the Sika farm in the village of Oe near Antsla in Võrumaa, devoted himself to art from an early age. He began studying at the newly opened Pallas Art School under the guidance of Konrad Mägi. The free-spirited environment of early Pallas made it possible to develop what Pärsimägi likely possessed from birth—a unique sense of color.
Pärsimägi, remembered by his contemporaries as a contradictory and rather reserved personality, wore simple and worn clothes, yet lived in art with incredible intensity, passion, imagination, and elegance. The secret of Pärsimägi which continues to captivate viewers in his work cannot be fully unraveled. Among his contemporaries there were those who were unable to grasp the essence of his seemingly simple works. However, it is precisely the disarming authenticity and direct honesty of Pärsimägi’s art that may be considered qualities that make his work resonate even today. The brutality of the outside world condemned him to an early death, but his art lives on.
The catalogue includes three longer essays by curator Liis Pählapuu, art historian Heie Marie Treier, and critic Harry Tafoya. More personal reflections on Pärsimägi’s influence and significance have been contributed by Jaan Toomik, Mare Joonsalu, Kristi Kongi, Olav Maran, Mari Vallikivi, Enn Lillemets, and Sonja Svarts. The catalogue contains numerous reproductions, including works that have not previously been publicly exhibited.
