Description

On 3 March 1983, the Tartu Photo Club opened the first exhibition in the series “Woman in Photographic Art” at the Tartu Art House, which instantly became one of the biggest hits in the history of exhibitions in Tartu. The series consisted of a total of five episodes. The most popular was the 1989 edition of “Woman in Photographic Art”, which was visited by 24 000 people in four weeks. The stories of the queue of people waiting in line at the doors of the Tartu Art House formed the original impulse for this book. The exhibition “Woman in Photographic Art” was an exhibition of scarcity. Eroticism was frowned upon by the Soviet public, and organising an exhibition on women required some political manoeuvring. As a reaction to this, a carnivalesque opposition to the USSR, including its puritanism, was an important part of the political mood at the time of independence. With the growth of media freedom – in 1989 the magazine Maaja began to appear, a nude appeared on the front cover of the newspaper Edasi etc. – “Woman in Photographic Art” lost its value as meeting a deficit and the exhibition faded out in the middle of the 1990s.
