Peeter Ulas (1934–2008) was an Estonian artist who belonged to the breakthrough generation of the 1960s. These artists turned their backs on socialist realism and experimented with form and graphic techniques. Ulas’ work during this time was forcefully expressive but also employed the decorative stylization typical of the era. By the end of the decade, surrealism had begun to influence his works. In the 1980s, he attempted to capture the elemental forces of nature in large-scale soft-ground etchings and aquatints. He also began charcoal drawings of pine trees, which led to comparisons with another Estonian nature-sensitive classic, Kristjan Raud. The abstract works of the early 21st century, created using mezzotint and drypoint techniques, represent a very distinctive chapter in Estonian art, for which it is difficult to find a comparable counterpart.
Mai Levin has written chapters “Peeter Ulas as a Draughtsman” and “Peeter Ulas’ Illustrations,” while Vappu Thurlow wrote “Peeter Ulas’ Graphic Art.” In addition to analyses of Ulas’ work, the book includes memories from the artist’s sister Aime Ulas, his brother Tiit Ulas, and his fellow student Herald Eelma. The monograph also lists Ulas’ works held in various museums and collections, as well as lists of illustrations and book designs. It concludes with a brief biography and bibliography of the artist. The best works of Peeter Ulas are reproduced in the book. Design by Urmas Viik. Photographers: Stanislav Stepaško, Ruudu Ulas, and Janno Lepind. The summaries were translated into English by Peeter Tammisto.
