Originally, the Greek word “elegy” (also lament) referred to verses written in elegiac couplets, which could cover themes such as war, love, death, and more. From the 16th century onward, the term “elegy” came to be understood in its modern sense—a poem with a melancholic tone, typically focused on themes of departure, grief, nostalgia, or longing for something unnamed. “Elegiac poetry” can also refer to reflective poetry more broadly. Often, an elegy describes a movement through grief towards consolation. In a sense, the idea of movement is already embedded in the concept of elegy itself—an understanding that the previous situation has changed, and there is nothing left but to move forward. It is a point in time and space where the old no longer exists, but the new has not yet arrived.
“Eleegiad” is a bilingual poetry and photography collection by Mariliin Vassenin and Teri Varhol, which includes, in addition to the Estonian-language poetry booklet, 12 black-and-white photographic postcards with English translations.
