Liis Pählapuu “Force majeure. Eesti kunsti hävimislood” (“Force Majeure. Stories of the Loss of Estonian Art”)

In addition to the physically visible history of Estonian art, there exists another hidden side. This consists of individual works of art and entire periods of artistic production that have been lost or destroyed over time, whose stories remain unwritten. The fate of these lost works has been significantly influenced by chance events and historical occurrences, often as a result of force majeure. The surrounding reality has become an integral part of the stories of the artworks themselves. Although, at best, information about these works has reached us through old reproductions, this “black-and-white” art history deserves more than just the acknowledgment of their disappearance. Knowledge of Estonian artists and their works should not be limited to the parts that have survived, based on the arbitrary selection of history’s currents. Collecting fragments of information about these previously unclear zones may bring new pieces of insight into the lives of the artists, the circumstances around them, their personal relationships with their artworks, the role of institutions in the preservation choices, and, naturally, the works of art themselves.
The book accompanies the exhibition “Force Majeure. Stories of the Loss and Disappearance of Estonian Art” at the Kumu Art Museum (04.03.2016–26.06.2016).
