The Strategy and Methods for Preserving the Contemporary Art Collection of the Estonian Art Museum
The 20th century drastically shifted the boundaries of artistic creation – from the traditional field of craftsmanship and material work, the focus moved towards concepts, emotions, processes, or in other words, everything intangible.
The ephemeral and dynamic nature of contemporary art creation practices is difficult to fit into the traditional museum preservation system, leading to a series of questions: how can the unstable creative materials of contemporary art be conserved? How to preserve the ideological layers that give meaning to the materials of contemporary art works? Does a museum have the right to collect works whose physical lifespan is short? What, then, will remain from contemporary heritage for future generations?
Hilkka Hiiop’s doctoral thesis attempts to analyze these complex and sometimes unanswered questions, involving not only museum specialists but also the artists themselves and a wider audience in the thought process.
