Catalogue “Henn Roode. Painter of Lightness and Truth”

Henn Roode (1924–1974) was, alongside Ülo Sooster, one of the most outstanding artists of the generation that followed the Second World War in Estonia. A talented young man fascinated by French art, he fell under the scrutiny of the Soviet security authorities during the years of Stalinism and spent many years in the Karaganda prison camp. Upon returning home, he managed to overcome his hardships, complete his studies, and emerge as one of the leading modernists of the 1960s and 1970s. The book offers a comprehensive overview of Henn Roode’s life and work by art historians Tõnis Tatar and Sirje Helme. Personal memories of her father are shared in the book by the artist’s daughter, Hanna Miller.

The catalogue accompanies the exhibition of the Tartu Art Museum “My Metamorphoses. Self-Portraits of Henn Roode” (01.11.2025–01.02.2026).
