The catalogue “Surrealism 100. Prague, Tartu, and Other Stories…” is a comprehensive catalog introducing Estonian and Czech surrealism, featuring a rich selection of images from the exhibition of the same name, which takes place from April 4th to September 8th, 2024 at the Estonian National Museum (ERM).
“Surrealism 100. Prague, Tartu, and Other Stories…” is an exhibition where Czech and Estonian surrealism engage in dialogue. On one hand, the parties involved are very different, but on the other hand, they are linked by the complex history of the two countries in the 20th century within the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union. Similar to the cultural and artistic history of Estonia, Czech and other Central and Eastern European art has to some extent been undeservedly marginalized and overlooked from the grand narratives. While Western Europe tells its story powerfully, it is time for us here in Europe’s eastern part to do the same.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with the National Gallery in Prague and is part of the main program of the European Capital of Culture 2024.
