The present volume, “The Meaning of Creativity in the Age of AI,” is the result of the symposium “Decoding New Technologies in Art and Design” held on September 10, 2020, at the Estonian Academy of Arts and virtually as part of the Ars Electronica Gardens web program. The core idea of the symposium and this publication is to develop an understanding and map critical points related to artificial intelligence (AI) and novel technological advancements. Our goal is to decode the changes, new ideas, trends, and methodologies that this technology brings into art and design. Additionally, this publication introduces new concepts, ideas, and threats posed by this evolving technology both now and in the future. Specifically, we address AI and machine learning and explore questions such as: What can AI do for creative communities? Is artificial intelligence a tool to enhance creativity and innovation, or does it replace human creativity through automation? And what impact might these computational processes have on our environment?
