Description

The book accompanies the exhibition “Dance of Colors”. Finnish modernist art” in the Kadriorg Art Museum (03.04‒08.20.2023).

Modernist Finnish art created in the first decades of the 20th century was born in the field of influence of two opposing trends: on the one hand, the romanticizing creation of national myths and symbols, and on the other hand, innovative currents originating from Western Europe that value the individuality and autonomy of the artist and the work of art. In the catalog of the exhibition, the seekers and rebels of the first decades of the 20th century in Finland are represented: outstanding painters Alvar Cawén, Väinö Kunnas, Jalmari Ruokokoski, Tyko Sallinen, Yrjö Ollila and others who, instead of politically motivated art, wanted to express the artist’s inner experience and subjective creative choices.

The project “Dance of colors. Finnish modernist art” continues the tradition of joint exhibitions between the Estonian Art Museum and Finnish museums. The exhibition and the catalog are also important for Finnish art studies, as they also bring to the public such material that is in the Estonian Art Museum’s storage and has been relatively unknown to Finnish researchers for a long time. An example can be the painting “Red Dance” from the legendary dance series by Väinö Kunnas.
