Description

In “The Craftsman”, Richard Sennett traces how art is one of the most fundamental human impulses: not just the desire to make something, but to make it well. The history of the relationship between man and material is long and complex. The programmer, the doctor, the artist and the builder all have to successfully interact with the physical environment around them and develop a complex repertoire of procedures to do so. Most of this cognition is tacit: “If a person had to get up and think about every last movement they make, it would take them an hour to get out of bed,” says Sennett. Doing something instinctively often means doing something that has become so routine that we don’t need to think about it. At higher skill levels, there is a constant interplay between tacit knowing and self-awareness that translates into quality work.
In exploring the manifestations of craftsmanship, Sennett moves through time and space, from ancient Roman brick-makers to Renaissance goldsmiths and Enlightenment printers, to modern designers, doctors, musicians and chefs, sharing the same experience. Sennett’s book expands our understanding of craft and craftsmanship and sheds light on the new relationship between ourselves and the world around us.
