Description

A complete overview of paintings by Eva Jänes which are connected to architecture.
Eva Jänes (b. 1942) was one of the most prolific Estonian monumental artists from the 1970s to the 1990s. The aim of this book is to bring out of the shadows Eva Jänes’s versatile oeuvre in monumental painting: 25 works on more than 1000 square metres, created in unison with buildings! Eva Jänes has painted frescoes and seccos, and created stained glass and mosaics. She is a considered a master of the sgraffito technique, cut into layers of coloured plaster. Jänes also used this technique for her best-known work: the mural in the hall of the central building of the Põdrangu sovkhoz (1978), which has an extraordinary, sacral effect in a festive room with high windows, and is still captivating today.
The richly illustrated book provides a comprehensive pictorial overview of all of Jänes’ monumental paintings, both surviving and destroyed.
The publication also includes interviews with the artist, reminiscences by her fellow students Tiiu Übi and Tiit Pääsuke, and an index of monumental paintings with photographs.
The book was designed by Piia Stranberg and the monumental paintings were photographed by Eve Kiiler. The book was edited by Kristi Metste, and the synopsis was translated into English by Epp Aareleid.
