R.Zobel “Tallinn (Reval). Fortifications in the Middle Ages”

The second book in Prof. Rein Zobel’s trilogy on the history of Tallinn (Reval) city planning focuses on the development of one of the most powerful structural elements of the medieval city – its fortifications. In the early 16th century, Tallinn, with a population of about 7,000, had designed and built an awe-inspiring system of defensive structures just before the Reformation of Martin Luther. The fortified city of Tallinn had 73 defensive towers and fortified gates, and its northwest side was further reinforced with a new type of outer bastion and two stone bastions.
