The catalogue accompanying the exhibition at the Mikkeli Museum (03.04.–31.10.2010) introduces one of Estonia’s most important foreign art collections, which was brought to the Estonian Art Museum thanks to former private collectors. No other movement of 20th-century modernism is as well represented and internationally recognized in Estonia as German Expressionism. The collection includes graphic works and drawings – its core consists of works by Expressionists, including artists from the pioneering groups Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter (Emil Nolde, Franz Marc, Heinrich Campendonk, Paul Klee, Erich Heckel, Alfred Kubin), as well as significant authors of late Expressionism (Neue Sachlichkeit, verism) such as Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, and George Grosz. Also featured are works by major figures of Expressionism such as Ernst Barlach, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Käthe Kollwitz, and others.
