Description

Olev Subbi (1930–2013) was one of the most famous artists in Estonia in the second half of the 20th century. Subbi was originally from Tartu. After his return from imprisonment in Siberia, he studied in Tallinn at the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR and was quickly recognised for his art. His desire to make the best possible paintings was evident in his choice of materials and deliberate treatment of their surface.

“After all, the most important dates in my life are the days when the picture was completed,” Olev Subbi once wrote to his sister living in Canada in the 1980s. Although every year he celebrated his birthday with a festive ritual and carefully remembered those of his friends, art was so important to him that the given quote was probably not an exaggeration. “My biography is still only made up of pictures,” he writes to his sister. “If I wanted to give you a true account of my life, I should send reproductions of my work, in the correct colors, of course.”

The catalog was published on the occasion of Olev Subb’s 90th birthday and includes art historian Eero Epner’s text about the artist’s life and work, as well as reproductions of 34 of Subb’s works, which are part of the Enn Kunila collection.
