Description

The special issue of the Estonian Art Museum’s Journal “Likeness in Difference: Perspectives on Baltic Regional Art History” is one of the outputs of the Estonian Art Museum’s five-year research direction “The Regional Specificity of Soviet-Era Art in the Baltics and the Communication Networks that Shaped It” (2021–2025). This research direction is primarily associated with one of the central goals of the Kumu Art Museum’s research and exhibition program – to (re)interpret and demonstrate both Estonian and broader Eastern European socialist-era art – and focuses on the Baltic region located at the intersection of different cultures and geopolitical spheres of influence. The research direction is tentatively divided into three main sub-themes: new media and materials as shapers of artist positions, Baltic and Eastern European women artists, and time- and region-transcending connections.

The special issue is also linked to two research projects: the Kumu Museum’s 2022 exhibition “Thinking Images” and an international seminar held in spring of the same year in collaboration between the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Estonian Art Museum, titled “Likeness in Difference: Perspectives on Baltic Regional Art History,” which brought together art, architecture, and design researchers from the three Baltic states. The result of this research collaboration is also the Baltic special issue of the journal “Art Studies” published at the end of 2023, edited by Ingrid Ruudi and seminar co-organizer Anu Allas. These special issues of the Estonian Art Museum’s Journal and “Art Studies” form a thematic pair.

While the articles selected for the special issue cover only a small part of the processes evident in Baltic post-Soviet-period art, they broaden knowledge about Baltic art and hopefully also highlight possible new perspectives that contribute to writing a dialogical, critical, applying new theoretical approaches, and transnational history of Soviet-era art.

The editor of the special issue is Eda Tuulberg (Estonian Art Museum – Kumu Art Museum, one of the organizers of the seminar “Likeness in Difference”).

Authors of the articles are Ieva Astahovska, Erika Grigoravičienė, Liisa Kaljula, Laine Kristberga, Adomas Narkevičius, and Kädi Talvoja.
