Description

French philosopher and phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s (1908-1961) best-known and most voluminous work “The Phenomenology of Perception” was first published in 1945. Half a century after the publication of Edmund Husserl’s first works, the author tries to unravel perception, sensations, being with oneself and being in the world, and other phenomenological questions in opposition to the Cartesian and also empiricist traditions. He states that abandoning both common sense and the dogmatism of science and returning to himself, he finds no inner hearth of truth, but a subject who is committed to the world: “Behind these faces or gestures nothing is hidden, no landscape inaccessible to me, there there is only a little shadow, and that only because of the light.” Vivian Puusepp wrote the introduction to the book translated by Mirjam Lepikult.
