Description

The book accompanies the Kumu Art Museum exhibition, Maire Männik. Estonian legend in Paris (23.08.2019-05.01.2020). Maire-Helve Männik (1922–2003) remains in the classics of Estonian art as a sculptor who established her career in Paris in the decades after the Second World War and was one of the most prominent Estonian sculptors who worked abroad at that time. With her semi-abstract compositions, she gained attention and exhibition opportunities in Paris as well as elsewhere in Europe and the United States. In her free work, she combined naturalistic details based on natural motifs with abstract form elements that grew out of the art of the 1950s, which is also unique in Estonian exile art. She left numerous portrait works and figurative sculptures, abstract compositions and public sculptures, bas-reliefs and medals. A significant part of her sculptural and medal works is related to Estonia. It includes the busts of Marie Under, Anton Hansen Tammsaare and Gustav Ränga, as well as the commemorative medal of the University of Tartu and the grave monument of Eduard Wiiralt located in the Pére Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
