“Sajand sisearhitektuuri” provides an overview of interior architecture spanning over a century, a period during which Estonian specialists began to dominate among professionals. The first chapter of the collection focuses on describing the landscape of interior architecture. The second part of the book features examples of interior designs created over more than a hundred years.
Compared to enduring architecture, interior design has been ephemeral and fleeting. Interiors are relatively easy to change; spaces can be adapted to better suit one’s needs, furniture can be rearranged or exchanged, and changes in approach can make a space more fashionable and contemporary. Masterful interior designs are worth preserving, yet ideally, this desire should come from the people themselves, as it is difficult to force someone to work in an environment they find disagreeable. Thus, is good design simultaneously attractively modern and timelessly enduring? This book aims to highlight the value of interior architecture, teaching readers to see and appreciate both old and new designs, and to contemplate the role of the interior architect.
Author Karin Paulus (born 1975) is a respected writer on interior architecture, design, and architectural art. She teaches the history of these fields at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Tartu Higher Art School, and Tallinn University of Technology, and has curated several exhibitions.
“Today, we spend a great deal of time indoors in our climate. Therefore, our surroundings deserve more attention! I wanted to showcase not only the excellent harmonious environments but also the extraordinarily unique interiors, as well as an extremely delicate approach to existing buildings. Alongside well-known works, the book also seeks to value smaller and now lost or significantly altered objects,” Paulus says. “The book encourages noticing successful interior architecture and, if possible, preserving valuable designs for a longer time.”
The book includes numerous new images, as well as rare historical photographs and drawings from private collections and museums.
