Description

This book is from the final period of Juri Lotman’s scientific work. It has been previously published in Russian and Italian, and the English translation is being released for the first time. The book builds upon ideas that are familiar to English-speaking readers from Lotman’s previous two late monographs Universe of the Mind and Culture and Explosion. All three works deal with questions that fascinated the scientist and thinker in his final years: the need to create a unified approach to natural, social, and spiritual phenomena; the role of evolutionary and explosive processes in history; and (closely linked to the two previous ones) art as a laboratory for unpredictability.

Lotman’s friends and colleagues, prominent scholars from the Tartu-Moscow semiotic school, highlight the unique tone and style of this book: “Reading this book, I had the feeling that I was conversing with Lotman. I could hear his intonations and sense his face turned toward me. It felt the same way when I attended his lectures in the past. It seemed as though he wasn’t speaking to everyone at once, but individually to each of us.” (Boris Uspensky). “This book is a perfect example of Lotman’s style. Here, Lotman expresses his most important ideas very clearly and in a form understandable to a wide audience, illustrating his statements with captivating examples based on vast erudition.” (Vyacheslav Ivanov).
