“Mayenne in Art: Crossed Destinies. French Outsider Art at the Kondase Centre.” The Mayenne art brut movement originates from the naive art tradition, with prominent figures such as Henri Rousseau, Henri Trouillard, and Jules Lefranc. Under Lefranc’s leadership, the Vieux Château Museum was founded in 1967, which has consistently focused on presenting naive and marginal art in France and around the world. In the late 1970s, Laval city was buzzing with vibrant cultural life, with the spirit of freedom inherited from predecessors like Henri Rousseau and Alfred Jarry clearly felt. In this intellectual atmosphere, several people who were otherwise distant from the art world began creating, including Jacques Reumeau, Alain Lacoste, Céneré Hubert, and others, who are now internationally recognized names and are introduced in this catalog.
