Description

Herman Melville’s story “Bartleby the Writer” (1853) is a late, somewhat non-standard work by the author of the American literary classic, the popular novel “Moby Dick” (1851), which, three quarters of a century after it was written, enthralled leading European absurdist writers Franz Kafka and Albert Camus as late bloomers, and which even later has inspired some key philosophers such as Jacques Derrida and Giorgio Agamben.

Repetition of the short-spoken and stubborn main character of the book, the writer Barteby – “I’d rather not do that!” – becomes the inevitable trigger of unpredictable events. The work’s fluctuation on the border between satire and sentiment exceeds the limitations of any individual interpretation, stroking the work against a logic that demands a single meaning.
