Description

The book accompanies the exhibition ”Wild souls. Symbolism in the Art of the Baltic States” at Kumu Art Museum October 12, 2018 – February 3, 2019. Exhibition “Âmes sauvages. Le symbolisme dans les pays baltes” was exhibited for the first time at the Orsay Museum in Paris from April 10 to July 15, 2018.
The exhibition highlights the special features of symbolist art of the early 20th century in the Baltic countries. On the one hand, the young artists here began to discover contemporary European art trends, but at the same time felt a closeness to their efforts to create a national identity. Their art often intertwines an international artistic language and traces of domestic folk art and oral tradition. The idea of creative freedom and the belief in the power of art to express the spiritual levels hidden in a person were brought from Europe. This catalog is the first comprehensive treatment of Baltic symbolism, which is introduced by Rodolphe Rapetti’s essay “Terra incognita”. Rapetti’s essay is driven by the ambition to bring the work of Baltic artists, which the author considers a unique phenomenon in the international context of symbolism, to the consciousness of the wider Western European art audience. In addition to the rich image material, the catalogue contains texts introducing the works exhibited in the exhibition by art researchers from the three Baltic countries.
