Description

“Aesthetics as Politics” consists of selected essays by the French philosopher Jacques Rancière, reinterpreting the regime of thinking about art through aesthetics and discussing its political contribution. Rancière aims to show how the concept of aesthetics, emerging from the revolutionary shifts in understanding art at the beginning of the 19th century, and its impact on various 20th-century trends (from the Frankfurt School to postmodernism), has repeatedly been attempted to be diminished, yet it has not lost its explanatory power or intellectual significance in contemporary art contexts. Through extensive examples—from Romantic literature to avant-garde art and Holocaust representations in film—Rancière illustrates his position that the internal connection between art and politics is unleashed precisely through the aesthetic prism, allowing art’s impact to be distinguished from other modes of practice.

The collection includes five longer essays from 1998 to 2008, including Rancière’s central philosophical work on art, “The Distribution of the Sensible: Aesthetics and Politics” (originally 2000). Additionally, the volume contains a preface by the publisher, an interview with the author from 2012, and an afterword by Maarja Kangro.

Jacques Rancière (1940) is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris VIII (Vincennes–Saint-Denis). His other notable books include “The Politics of Aesthetics” (Aux bords du politique, 1990), “Disagreement” (La Mésentente, 1995), “The Politics of Aesthetics” (Malaise dans l’esthétique, 2004), “Hatred of Democracy” (La Haine de la démocratie, 2005), and “Aisthesis: Scenes from the Aesthetic Regime of Art” (Aisthesis: Scènes du régime esthétique de l’art, 2011).
