Description

The book accompanies the exhibition “España blanca y negra. Spanish Landscapes from Fortuny to Picasso” at the Kadriorg Art Museum (April 13 – August 25, 2024).

The Spanish landscapes exhibition and this book bring together breathtaking romantic Spanish vistas and masterpieces of modernism. Whether vibrant and sunny or dark and tragic, the white and black facets of Spain’s essence are revealed through splendid artworks.

Landscape painting acquired special significance in Spain only at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Through it, artists were able to highlight philosophical searches for the meaning of life, individual and societal antagonisms, patriotic admiration and poeticization of their homeland, and a yearning for closeness between humans and nature in an industrializing and mechanized world. Through landscape, artists also emphasized their connection to certain traditions, sought roots, and the essence of their land, which added authenticity and depth to their work.
