Description

Shared Practices: Intertwining Art Forms in Socialist Eastern European Culture (2015).
On 22.10.–24.10.2015, the conference “Shared Practices: Interweaving of Art Forms in the Culture of Socialist Eastern Europe” jointly organized by the Kumu Art Museum and the Institute of Art Studies took place.

The changes that took place in the culture and approaches to art in socialist Eastern Europe from the late 1950s due to the thaw and its aftermath led to closer and more diverse relations between different art forms. On the one hand, it was promoted by the idea of the synthesis of arts promoted in the framework of the modernization of official art, on the other hand, new types of art practices developed, which today can be called interdisciplinary (different forms of conceptual art, installation and environmental art practices, happenings and performances, visual poetry, early sound art, etc.) . Considering the expansion of the boundaries of art forms in different cultural contexts of the second half of the 20th century, the conference asks the question, what was the specificity of this process in the countries of socialist Eastern Europe?
