This issue of the Proceedings of the Estonian Art Museum is based on the topics raised at the international conference “Symbolic Art in the Baltic Sea Region 1880-1930” (31.01.-02.02.2019) held at the Kumu Art Museum. In the collection, the approaches developed from the presentations of seven conference speakers have been published.
The driving force behind this conference and compilation of the collection was the exhibition “Âmes sauvages. Le symbolisme dans les pays baltes” (“Free souls. Symbolism in the art of the Baltic countries”) in the spring and summer of 2018 at the Orsay Museum in Paris. In a similar composition, the exhibition was then exhibited in the Kumu Art Museum and in 2020 in the Lithuanian Art Museum and the Latvian National Art Museum. The exhibition in the prestigious Paris museum, created in cooperation with the French curator Rodolphe Rapetti, brought Baltic art classics to the attention of an international audience for the first time. Introducing the work of Baltic artists to a wider Western European audience was an important step in cementing their membership in the streambed of European symbolism. At the same time, the exhibition clearly highlighted the peculiarities and individual characteristics of Baltic artists arising from their origin and environment.
