The ensemble Peoleo of the Estonian SSR State Art Institute was founded in 1964. I joined the school in 1966 and from that time until the band’s dissolution in 1974, I was deeply involved with the group’s music and personally connected to its musicians, continuing to do so later as well.
The following text was requested by my old friend Eino Mäelt this summer, with the help of a detailed album from 1968, which includes Peoleo’s texts and photographs, along with other documents. This made my work much easier from a factual standpoint, but my perspective on the group has always been shaped by my own views—not just from that time, but also in the broader context of Estonia’s more recent history.
Estonia’s independence in 1988–1990 is associated with the Singing Revolution, and indeed, this is especially felt during every song festival, where singing gives a unique energy to the freedom movement and unites individualistic Estonians. This can be traced back to the late 19th century when choir songs inspired by poetry and literature clearly highlighted messages of freedom.” – Leonhard Lapin
