Catalogue “Come in, come in – the door is open”

The exhibition “In, in – the door is open! Edith Karlson, Mary Reid Kelley, Eva Mustonen” at the Kumu Contemporary Art Gallery (11.10.2019 – 29.03.2020) is part of the 100th anniversary program of the Estonian Art Museum. One of the focuses of this anniversary program was the female artist, both historically and in contemporary art.

The exhibition brings together the works of three artists who, although working in different media and with very different aesthetics, speak a similar language in a sense. The practice of Estonian artists Edith Karlson, Eva Mustonen and American artist Mary Reid Kelley could be characterized in the broadest sense as narrative art that uses fiction as a method. In the works, it manifests itself in the form of allegorical, autobiographical and mythological narratives, as well as the creation of strong characters (both in the form of people and things) and mostly dramatic events.
