Description

Catalogue “Terje Ojaver. Serpent” (Ussipulm) accompanies the exhibition of the same name held at the Tartu Art Museum from March 8 to September 28, 2025. The catalogue explores the artistic formation of Terje Ojaver and the foundational elements of her work – the individuals and societal influences that have shaped it. The publication also contains an abundance of photographs from various stages of the artist’s career and her works, many of which are also featured in the exhibition. Included is an interview with the artist herself.

Ojaver came of age as a sculptor during the final decade of Soviet Estonia. The free sculpture movement of her youth in Estonia followed divergent paths, carried by the winds of change, striving for interdisciplinarity and the merging of artistic forms, engaging in social critique, and seeking common ground with architecture and urban space on a monumental scale. In this environment, she emerged as a gifted synthesizer – mastering both abstract and figurative visual languages, modelling like a goddess, reconciling the architectural with the figurative, and blending the plasticity of bronze and aluminium.
