Description

Knowledge of the life and work of the Baltic German painter Lilly Walther has so far been sketchy, mostly summarised in a few sentences in general art history books. Now this mistake has finally been corrected. The catalogue includes a chronological account of Walther’s life, reproductions of her works, historical photographs and articles that explore various aspects of her life and work. The art historian Katrin Kivimaa writes about Walther’s travels to the centres of the European art life, comparing her with other Baltic German woman artists. Kai Stahl focuses on the representation of the human figure and Bart Pushaw on Walther’s Japonisme. Nele Ambos writes about Lilly Walther as one of Estonia’s first restorers and the extraordinary role her work played in Estonian art history.
The catalogue on Lilly Walther, compiled by Nele Ambos, was among the nominees for the 2022 Annual Prize for Historical Writing.
