Description

Ülo Sooster’s illustrations for the collection of popular science articles “Physics: Near and Far” were first published in Moscow in 1963. Now, those interested in book art, the history of science, or physics can rediscover these illustrations, accompanied by commentary from physics professor Jaak Kikas. In addition, the book contains an article about Ülo Sooster and his work in book design, an interview with Viktor Trostnikov, the editor of the original book, and a letter from Ilya Kabakov to the Tartu Art Museum.

Ülo Sooster (1924–1970) is primarily known as a painter, but he is less recognized for his work as a book illustrator. He studied at the Higher Art School Pallas in Tartu. After World War II, he continued his art education at the Tartu State Art Institute, but due to harboring anti-state thoughts, he was sent to the Karaganda labor camp for six years. After his release in 1956, he moved to Moscow, his wife’s hometown. For unofficial artists like Sooster, there were few earning opportunities aside from illustrating books. He illustrated and designed over 80 books, including children’s literature, science fiction, popular science works, and poetry.
