Description

Julie Hagen-Schwarz (1824–1902) was a Baltic German painter who received fame for her portraits and was the first Estonian woman artist to be elected an academician. Her father, August Matthias Hagen , was also an artist and worked as the head of the Drawing School of the University of Tartu. Hagen-Schwarz herself had numerous students.

The book accompanies the Tartu Art Museum exhibition “Julie Hagen-Schwarz”. Estonia’s first female artist” (10.11.2017 – 15.04.2018), and provides a comprehensive overview of the artist’s life and work. Among other things, the educational opportunities of German women in the first half of the 19th century are discussed.
Experts in their field – Christin Conrad, Dr. Anja Wilhelmi, Tiina Abel and Kristiina Tiideberg – have contributed to this publication as authors, who with their activities have helped, among other things, to shed light on the lives of Baltic German women and make sense of the art they created. The book is in Estonian, English and German.
