Description

Johannes Saal (1911–1964) studied at the Pallas Art School, after which he initially worked as an art teacher and later as a freelancer. His works have primarily reached viewers only after the artist’s death. His oeuvre includes numerous portraits, but themes of death and suffering are also often encountered.

With a sensitive and independent nature, Johannes Saal was as headstrong an artist in his time as Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) was in Spain. The exhibition catalog provides an overview of the artist’s life and work, offering insights into his era and the contexts of his creativity. Selected excerpts from J. Saal’s epistolary legacy allow a glimpse into the artist’s emotional and intellectual world, while excerpts from contemporary art criticism reflect the changes and ideologization of art policy in a totalitarian state. The catalog is richly illustrated, with texts translated into English.
