Description

The book “Ilmar Malin. The Glow of Eternity” explores Ilmar Malin’s surrealist works and their background, while also documenting the exhibition of the same name at the Tartu Art Museum (March 16, 2024 – July 21, 2024).
“Ilmar Malin. The Glow of Eternity” focuses on the longest period of Malin’s creative career, which began in the mid-1960s, during which he became Estonia’s foremost surrealist.
In the book, curator Mae Variksoo provides an overview of the artist’s journey to surrealism and the visual language that emerged during this period, characterized by striking contrasts – in one composition, glowing hues meet dark voids, moments intersect with eternity, and biological micro-structures blend with cosmic vastness.
Art historian Kadri Asmer delves into the extensive influence of the artist’s social circle on Malin’s worldview, the themes that fascinated him, and the form that surrealism took in his work.
The reader will find numerous reproductions in the book, many of which depict works from private collections that have not been publicly exhibited before.
