Catalogue Endel Kõks “With Courage, Freedom and Joy”

Endel Kõks (1912–1983) studied initially to become a teacher in Tartu but soon found his calling in painting, graduating from the Pallas Art School in 1940. He fled to Germany in 1944 and then moved to Sweden. He boldly experimented with new styles and vibrant colors, showing interest in depicting American indigenous cultures as well.

The monographic publication provides an overview of the artist Endel Kõks’s work in his homeland and in exile, drawing parallels with the development of his schoolmates Elmar Kitse and Lepo Mikko in their homeland. The publication offers a direct insight into the artist’s mindset and the cultural life in exile through excerpts from Kõks’s correspondence. Richly illustrated, the texts are also available in English.
