Description

“Scientific Art Studies” is the journal of the Estonian Society of Art Scientists and Curators, a non-profit organization that publishes original research in the field of art history, theory and visual culture, as well as reviews of specialized books and events.

The aim of the magazine is to support and stimulate the study of Estonian art, architecture, design and the comprehensive spatial and visual environment. “Scientific Art Studies” is the central forum for the publication and exchange of scientific ideas in this field in Estonia. The focus of the magazine is primarily on Central and Eastern Europe and the Nordic countries, but also on broader theoretical issues. Special issues reflect narrower current topics: for example, special issues have been published that considered realism, the social determination of the living environment, the creation of heritage, the relationship between art and ideology, the relationship between the visual culture of medieval Livonia, the relationship between image and verbal language, and several other issues. In the Exchange of Thoughts section, writings that look at the self-reflection of the profession – methodology, problems and developments – appear; the theory translations section mediates classical and contemporary art and architecture theory.

In this issue:
Ringa Takanen. Awakening Beauty – an emancipated woman? Venny Soldan-Brofeldt’s work “Jesus wakes Jairus’ daughter” as an example of changes in the approach to the topic.
Katrin Kivimaa. Art belongs to the people? Changes in the general public’s perception of art in Estonia in the 1940s.
Karin Hallas-Murula. About the Stalinist organization of architectural education in Estonia 1944-1950.
Marek Volt, Kristiina Reidolv. Interpreting and evaluating a work of art: A philosophical relational analysis.
Focus/Griselda Pollock. Sociological thinking, aesthetic thinking. Historical reflections on sociology and art history.
Archive/Mai Levin. Brought about by the return of Grenzstein.
