“Architecture and the thermal dimension”

Description

Volume 2 of the “Architecture Library” series is dedicated to the thermal dimension of architecture. While historical architecture had to inevitably consider thermal aspects, modern technology has enabled uniformly comfortable temperatures that often render the rich spatial experiences of the past into something uniform and repeatable. The challenge of contemporary spatial practice is to develop the symbolic qualities of space that emerge from its thermal dimension, in order to unlock the true experiential potential of space.

The collection consists of two texts: Luis Fernández-Galiano’s “Thermal Space in Architecture: Architecture and Fire from Vitruvius to Le Corbusier,” a chapter from his book “Fire and Memory: On Architecture and Energy” (El fuego y la memoria: sobre arquitectura y energía, 1991). This text explores the history and socio-political background of the emergence of uniform thermal space. Following this is Lisa Heschong’s book “Thermal Delight in Architecture” (1979), which sets as an ideal a versatile thermal space instead of a uniformly temperature-controlled one and explores possibilities for achieving this through examples from different architectural traditions.

“Architecture and the Thermal Dimension” accompanies issue 59 of the magazine “Ehituskunst,” which focuses on the relationship between a cool climate and spatial practice from the perspective of a practicing spatial poet.
