Cats and dogs have lived with humans for thousands of years and have inspired artists time and time again. Both are main and supporting characters in art, they are presented from a positive, negative or neutral point of view and are depicted in all kinds of genres and techniques. The book provides an overview of the various meanings of cats and dogs in the history of art and culture, and examines how artists of different eras have reflected people’s understanding of nature and animals, and through that, human nature.

The book accompanies the Kadriorg Art Museum exhibition “Always by our side”. Cats and dogs 16.-19. in the art of the 20th century” (26.09.–28.02.2021).
